Knitting + social media =#Taskuneuloosi (pocket knitting)

Note: this post has been published in Chinese too (本文中文請按連結)

Two weeks ago I attended a special event called #Taskuneuloosi in Finnish, roughly translated as “pocket knitting”. “Pocket” means that you can take it with you anywhere, while “neuloosi” is a new Finnish word which in my understanding, indicates being in a “flow, happy, enjoyable, even bit addicted” status of knitting.
(I found the definition from here, in Finnish) My Finnish friends, please correct me if I understood wrongly. ;-)

#Taskuneuloosi as an event concept has been organised for 5 times including the one I attended. The event provides an occasion where people who loves to knit can meet each other, face to face, sharing their works, at the same time learning something new about social media. How cool it is! While this blog is about design, innovative, creative products from Finland, #Taskuneuloosi to me is like an innovative “concept”, which should be spread all over around Finland, even across the borders.

This time the topic in #Taskuneuloosi is blogging. There were about 20 bloggers/knitters gathering together at Finland’s first, and by far the only Knit Cafe – Lentävä Lapanen (eng. Flying Mitten). Atmosphere was warm and welcoming, led by two entrepreneurs in Finnish social media field:Pauliina Mäkelä from Kinda Oy and Marja Nousiainen from Viestintä Oy Tulevaisuus.

During the event we shared our experience on blogging, discussing different aspects such as:

How to start blogging?
What to write on blog?
Good photos on blog, how?
Blogging is interesting, but no time to do it?
Blog marketing, article length, how to attract more comments, how to share blog contents in other social media platforms. Who are your readers? writing blog for yourself as a diary, or writing for certain target group/readers?

We also heard many interesting stories about blogging, got great links and recommendations on blogs and facebook blogging-related groups. All in all very relax yet informative.

Although I have been blogging for over 10 years, it’s still very interesting to hear different views on blogging, which made me able to jump out of my own “experience” to see things from different angles..

To me I can never have enough from blogging. Although the starting point of my blog was to write about my own life and observation in Finland, however throughout the years blogging has brought me much more surprises than I’ve ever expected. Blogging has led me to publish my first book, then the second, then the third is coming this year.

Blogging has also created many interesting contacts for me and for people around me, including attracting Taiwanese TV -program to interview a retiring, respected liberian in Seinäjoki and got a log house in Alajärvi sold to Taiwan.

The most important of all, blogging connects people with similar interests. By blogging we became friends, and support to each other. For me the online community has always been as “real” as daily contacts at work or at school. Honestly I don’t have much negative experience in blogging, instead, blogging has been an important way to open my world!

This time, the #taskuneuloosi as a social media’s live event again connected people!

I was happy to meet Pauliina/Kinda Oy again whom I haven’t seen for 5 years. I also finally got chance to meet Marja/Viestintä Oy Tulevaisuus, after exchanging a few emails for reporting the Hyvä Kasvaa Järvenpäässä -asukasliike for Taiwanese magazine Shopping Design last autumn.

It was also intriguing for me to hear that Marjaana has started her blog Villasukkavuosi for recording knitting works she would make during one year. How interesting! I can’t help start imaging, if it were me who started a blog to record my knitting works, in my snail-like speed I might only have 3 posts on my blog in one year. ;-)

Then the blogger Auli who sat right next to me, happened to have a really interesting textile design project going on, on the theme of the artist community around Tuusula lake. Looking forward to see how it progresses! Here is Auli’s post on #taskuneuloosi

I also found that the blogger Rouva Sana was the same “Minna” I met a few months ago in my son’s kindergarten’s autumn meeting. Connections, one after another, brought people close to each other, or at least having more chance to get to know each other. That’s the beauty of blogging, social media, and of course, #taskuneuloosi.

All in all, a beautiful event, with a group of wonderful people, at a lovely Knit Cafe, and many inspiring talks. What else one needs to wish for a weekend?!
